STATOIL ART COLLECTION exhibition and editorial design

– Visual identity, exhibition design, photography, book design, communication materials. (Art direction, photo and design: Nina Ansten)

More than one hundred artworks from the Statoil art programme are on display at Vestfossen Kunstlaboratorium. A book, developed in close collaboration between curator Mari F. Sundet and designer and photographer Nina Ansten, accompanies the project. The book serves as an extended presentation of the project and is designed to have a permanent usefulness also after the exhibition is closed down.

The project logo and visual identity reflects the title and underlying theme of the exhibition; how people relate to technology. The logo is designed to be flexible and responsive according to the different medias in which it is shown. The logo adapts to different conditions, but whilst changing it is still recognizable across different surfaces.

ART IN THE WORKPLACE. In meeting with Statoil, we quickly came to realize that the company’s art was more than a collection and that in presenting it we also had to reflect upon what the artworks mean in their usual environment, hanging on the walls of a large oil company. We visited different Statoil locations in Norway and abroad to examine the art that daily surrounds the employees. Through photography and interviews with Statoil employees we document how the artworks function in these surroundings.

Text, images and design in this book are inextricably linked to each other. The contextual photographs of the art pieces are also incorporated within the exhibition space. You can watch an art piece on display in the gallery, and next to it is photographs of the same piece in its daily habitat in a Statoil location. In the same way as the exhibition also displays artworks purely on white background – the second part of the book works as a catalogue, displaying the art pieces on white background.

“It will be very different from the traditional way of showing a corporate collection” –Jens R. Jenssen, leader of the Statoil art programme.

Tech(nology) 4(for) Change has as its point of departure the assumption that art as a technology stimulates thought, and thereby generates a creative mindset in employees, who are the company’s most valuable resource. All the works in this exhibition were chosen because they can be read as attempts to reflect on how people relate to technology, a relationship curator Mari F. Sundet identifies as an underlying theme of the collection. In other words, Statoil surrounds its employees with art that reflects the challenges that confront the company on a daily basis – and with this exhibition we wish to continue the discussion of these issues in dialogue with our visitors.
