FRIDA HANSEN Stavanger Art Museum

– Visual identity, communication materials, exhibition design, editorial/book design. (Art direction & design: Nina Ansten)

For the first time in 40 years, a large exhibition featuring the works of Frida Hansen (1855–1931) will be shown in Norway. This internationally acclaimed artist from Stavanger pioneered in the development of Norwegian textile art at the turn of the twentieth century. Today she is considered one of Norway’s foremost artists and representatives of Art Nouveau and Symbolism.

In connection with the exhibition, which is curated by Inger M.L. Gudmundson and Janne Leithe and produced by Stavanger Art Museum, a thoroughly illustrated catalogue is being published, designed by Nina Ansten, with essays by Inger M.L. Gudmundson, Janne Leithe and Widar Halén.

The exhibition gathers over twenty of Hansen’s most important works from museums and collections throughout Europe. Few of Hansen’s works were purchased by Norwegian museums and collections during her own lifetime; hence one of Norway’s finest Art Nouveau artists is seldom accessible to the Norwegian public. “With this exhibition and the accompanying catalogue, our aim is to shed light on an important artist in the Norwegian and international context, and to add to the body of knowledge about the woven art of Frida Hansen”, says Hanne Beate Ueland, Director of Stavanger Art Museum.
