Yoko Ono, board game

Produced on the occasion of the exhibition:
shown at Astrup Fearnley Museum of Modern Art, Oslo.

This is a poster aimed at the Astrup Fearnley Museum Children’s Art Club. The poster also works as a board game, and is used as a teaching tool. It’s main focus is Yoko Ono’s “Instruction Works”. Using simple language, the artist sets up objects, events, rituals – actions which are given a precise elaboration when fulfilled by the performer, materially and/or mentally. The Instruction Works need a performer who implements or materializes them. Yoko Ono presents the spectator with the art work which becomes a shared mental or physical project.

Each “stop” in the board game represents a work by Yoko Ono, and initiates action from the players:

Listen to each other’s pulse by
Putting your ear on the other’s

y.o. 1963 winter

Put your shadows together until
They become one.

y.o. 1963

The back of the poster is decorated with instructions on how to fold the paper to make a container. On the paper you write what you want the container to be filled with. This is a reference to Yoko Ono’s work called “Water Event”. A piece where she invites other artists to produce a container for water, or an idea for one. Yoko Ono uses water as a metaphor for love. (In pagan terms water is emotion – love.) With this poster the children can produce their own container – with their personal choice of content.
